You've waited for this season with a full heart and a growing belly. Somewhere between preparing the nursery, going to doctor's appointments, and wondering if you'll ever sleep again, you might have this question swirling in your mind:

When should I schedule my maternity photos?

If you've been Googling or asking friends, you're probably hearing numbers like 28 weeks, 30 weeks, or 32 weeks.

Those dates are helpful, but after photographing many maternity sessions, I've learned that the answer isn't quite as simple as choosing a number on the calendar.

The best time for your maternity photos depends on how you feel, how you want your photographs to look, and how you want to remember this season of your life.

I've photographed women who came in just days before giving birth and absolutely loved their images. I've also worked with mamas who scheduled later in pregnancy and found themselves wishing they had done their session a little earlier.

So let's talk about maternity photography timing without the pressure of finding one "perfect" week.

1. When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

Before we talk about how many weeks pregnant you should be for your session, there's another important question:

When should you actually book?

I recommend reaching out to your photographer during your second trimester, especially if you have a specific date, photographer, location, or season in mind.

This gives you time to plan your wardrobe, decide whether you'd like an outdoor or studio experience, and choose a date that works well with your pregnancy and your photographer's availability.

This can be especially important if you're hoping for fall colors, a weekend session, or another particularly popular time of year.

You don't have to have everything figured out when you inquire. That's part of what I help you with.

2. So, When Is the Best Time to Have Maternity Photos?

For many expecting mothers, the sweet spot is around 28 to 32 weeks.

At this point:

  • Your belly is usually beautifully defined.
  • You may still have good energy and mobility.
  • You're often comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy an outdoor session.
  • Your pregnancy is visible and beautifully present without necessarily feeling like you're in the final stretch.

For many women, this creates a lovely balance between a beautiful, defined bump and physical comfort.

But here's the important part:

There is no single "perfect" week.

Every pregnancy is different.

Some women feel wonderful at 32 weeks. Others feel their best earlier. Some want to wait until their belly is as prominent as possible, while others would rather have their session before the final weeks become physically demanding.

Your comfort matters.

3. What If I'm Already Past 32 Weeks?

Don't panic.

I've photographed maternity sessions at 36 and even 38 weeks, and those sessions can be incredibly meaningful.

One mama came for her maternity photos just two days before giving birth. She loved having those final photographs of her pregnancy and was so grateful she decided to create them.

So if you're already 33, 34, 35 weeks, or beyond, don't assume you've missed your opportunity.

Let's talk.

Your session may look a little different depending on how you're feeling, but there is still so much beauty to document.

4. Think About How You Want Your Session to Feel

The timing of your session can also depend on the experience you're imagining.

Outdoor maternity sessions

Outdoor sessions tend to involve more walking and movement, so an earlier part of the 28–32 week window may feel especially comfortable.

We can take our time, move between locations, and create photographs that feel natural and connected.

Studio or indoor maternity sessions

If you're further along and want something a little more relaxed, an indoor session can be a beautiful option.

A studio or in-home setting allows for a slower pace, more opportunities to sit or rest, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

The goal isn't to make you fit into a particular type of session.

The session should fit you.

5. And What If Something Changes?

Pregnancy doesn't always follow the plan.

Maybe you scheduled your session for 30 weeks and suddenly you're exhausted. Maybe the weather doesn't cooperate. Maybe your pregnancy is progressing differently than you expected.

That's okay.

One of the things I want my maternity clients to feel is that they don't have to make this experience perfect.

We can adjust.

We can reschedule when necessary, change the pace, take breaks, and adapt the session to how you're feeling that day.

Your maternity photos aren't about creating a perfect version of pregnancy.

They're about remembering your version of it.

6. You Don't Have to Look a Certain Way to Be Worth Photographing

I want to say this gently because I know how easy it is to compare yourself to other women during pregnancy.

Maybe your belly doesn't look like someone else's.

Maybe you're carrying differently this time.

Maybe you're swollen, tired, or simply don't feel like yourself.

You don't have to look a certain way for your maternity photographs to be meaningful.

Your body is changing. Your family is changing. You're becoming someone's mother, or becoming a mother again.

That deserves to be remembered.

My job isn't to make you look like someone else.

It's to help you feel comfortable, guide you through the experience, and create photographs that allow you to see this version of yourself with tenderness.

7. My Simple Maternity Photography Timeline

If you're wondering when to start planning, here's the simple version:

Second trimester → Start researching photographers and thinking about the experience you want.

Around 20–25 weeks → Book your photographer and choose your session date.

Around 28–32 weeks → A beautiful window for many maternity sessions.

32–36+ weeks → Still absolutely possible. We'll take your comfort and pregnancy into consideration.

Already 36+ weeks? → Don't assume it's too late. Reach out and let's see what we can create.

And remember: these are guidelines, not rules.

8. Ready to Plan Your Maternity Session?

If you're expecting a baby in the Richmond, Virginia area, I'd love to help you document this season in a way that feels beautiful, relaxed, and true to you.

My maternity experience can include styling guidance, access to select client wardrobe pieces, and professional makeup, so you don't have to figure out every detail on your own.

Whether you're dreaming of an outdoor maternity session, a more intimate studio experience, or documenting both pregnancy and those first days with your baby, we can create an experience that fits your family.

If you're currently pregnant, I'd recommend reaching out during your second trimester so we have plenty of time to plan your session.

Wherever you are in your pregnancy journey, I hope you give yourself permission to pause for a moment and remember this season.

Your baby will grow up.

Your belly will change.

But these photographs will let you come back to this moment.
